BEST plans to use GPS Tracking for Fleet Vehicles
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST)
Wouldn’t it be nice if you already knew how much time you’ll have to wait for your bus at the bus station? You could easily plan your travel according to it and avoid the situation of unnecessarily waiting for it. Bus services around the globe have started to make this idea a reality.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has finally decided to take a step towards installing Global Positioning System (GPS) and Passenger Information System in its fleet of 3700 buses. BEST will be introducing both systems and make it available to passengers by the February of next year.
GPS is a satellite-based navigation system which will provide real-time information about vehicle’s location, trajectory and route history through compatible vehicle tracking devices installed in all the buses. Together with Passenger Information System (PIS), the system will hand out arrival time, bus routes and delays owing to traffic jams and accidents at an on-demand basis to passengers. All this information will be readily available to passengers and daily commuters.
Demand for real-time GPS updates through a mobile app or web platform dates back to 2012 when consumers had started to prefer smartphones over normal feature phones. With the launch of IOT and Cloud Services, commerce capabilities of transportation systems have greatly increased. The administration believes that these facilities will increase the number of passengers and that once again BEST will become the top choice of commutation for people.
