“NavIC” India’s first own GPS, all set to endow you accurate location information

NEW DELHI: Good news for all the gadgets lovers, as your smart phones and car navigation system will soon take Positioning from India’s own GPS ‘NavIC”, the government’s desi global positioning system (GPS) has taken a step forward to challenge the current GPS system of the west.

NavIC (‘Navigation with Indian Constellation’ whose Hindi meaning is ‘sailor’ or ‘navigator’), a grand project innovated by Modi government, is all set to hit the market for public use and could soon be offered to foreign system also.

“Request for Proposal (RFP) has been called to start the implementation of NavIC so that the platform can be rolled out and popularised,” IT secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney said.

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) or the latest one “NavIC, will work through a constellation of seven satellites.

NavIC, is particularly designed for the public user to provide them the exact location information within the country. It will help India in taking a position among other selected countries which have their own positioning system like America’s GPS (with 24 satellites in a constellation), Russia has its GLONASS, European Union its Galileo and china is also in the developing process of Beidou Navigation Satellite System.

The development work for the rollout of NavIC is also confirmed by IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
